Shocking ads in Georgia address the serious problem of childhood obesity. But some think the ads could actually back fire.

With statements like “It’s hard being a little girl if you’re not.” “Big bones didn’t make me this way. Big meals did.” and “Being fat takes the fun out of being a kid.” researchers feel that the guilt and shaming tactics could make the problem worse.

The worst part about these ads is the labored breathing that you hear at the end as whatever message (“stop sugarcoating it, Georgia” is mentioned in the article) pops up. 

Also, I’m not going to say I agree with these ads because I don’t. BUT: If anyone thinks the ads are doing damage to the kids, they should spend a few days in the children’s shoes. Peers will always do an excellent job of shaming/being mean to the kids they see as different or weak…especially as they reach the later years of elementary school and into middle school. Ads and billboards are just a part of that shame equation.
